REVIEW OLYMPUS C5000Z

OLYMPUS C5000Z OLD BUT NICE CAMERA (Review)

Especially in consumer electronics, there is a process of transition from the first rough prototypes to useful and more capable models. In digital cameras, on the other hand, since 2002-2003, models suitable for different needs have started to be produced that make the photography experience enjoyable with their appearance, ease of use and technical capabilities compared to previous years.
I have used the Olympus C5000z digital camera, announced in 2003, together with a DSLR at various times. I bought it from the flea market four years ago. The first thing that impressed me about this camera was its useful  and nice design. It has a simpler design and features compared to the C5060 model announced in the same year.
It is a camera that can be called advanced with extensive menu options, a top adjustment dial, hot shoe for external flash (and built-in flash), Manual control, My mode, Pixel mapping (Which controls and maps corrupted pixels in the CCD), Auto bracketing, IR remote control and Super macro mode.

Olympus C5000Z, 5.0-Megapixel CCD Sensor, 2,560x1,920 Pixel images, 105 x 74 x 46 millimeters, 272 g weight, a camera you can carry with you.
5 Mp is enough for your small prints and for you to see full frame on most monitors.

The camera has a 1.8 inch fixed LCD screen.

There are orange and green led indicators next to the viewfinder. When the focus is locked, the green led lights steadily. If the orange lamp lights, the flash fires automatically. There is a target mark in the middle of the real-time optical viewfinder and it helps to see the center of the frame and adjust the frame when shooting through the viewfinder.

The Olympus C-5000Z digital photographic camera has a 3x optical zoom lens. the 35mm equivalent 38-114mm glass lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 - 4.8. The camera also has a digital zoom of up to 4x. It also has gears in the body that allow you to attach external accessory lenses to the wide/tele.

The sharp and high-quality lens of the camera shows the tradition of quality that Olympus has maintained since the film cameras.  The white balance, sharpness, contrast and saturation values of the following sample photos are as the default settings, and none of the photos have been adjusted for color, brightness, sharpness in the image processing program and are as they were taken.

The top setting dial has Auto, Program (P), (A) Aperture Priority, (S) Shutter Speed Priority and (M) Manual exposure modes, Movie Mode, My Mode (Customizes the specific user), Play mode and six shooting modes: Portrait Mode, Sports Mode, Landscape Portrait Mode, Landscape Scene Mode, Night Mode, Self-Portrait Mode.

The on/ off button is quite practical and has the convenience of a DSLR that, like most compact cameras, will not require pressing with a fingernail.
It offers JPEG or uncompressed TIFF file format, Panorama mode, Manual focusing, Noise Reduction, White balance, Sharpness, Contrast and Saturation settings, as well as extensive menu settings.
The camera uses an xD-Picture card. The xD card continued to be used by Olympus and Fujifilm until 2009. As you know, in the following years, the transition to SD card was made.
This camera uses a lithium ion battery (LI-10B). The battery I used while shooting was almost the same age as the camera. Despite this, the battery had enough power to allow me to photograph several subjects.

You can choose Aperture priority (A), Speed priority (S), Manual (M). Three settings appear together on the mode dial. You need to select which setting you want to use by entering the menu. When the camera is turned off and turned on, it starts in 'A' mode. In other words, if you have set the last Manual mode, it switches to 'A' mode when it turns off and turns on.

You can get better results when you manually compensate the camera's exposure settings according to the light and subject conditions. It is very practical to change the exposure compensation setting. You can adjust the exposure in the ± 2.0 in 1/3 steps with the right and left buttons. You will see the change as a number at the top right of the screen.
In manual mode, you can control both the aperture and shutter speed with the directional keys. In manual mode, the exposure compensation display on the upper-right side of the LCD screen shows the exposure measurement, changing according to your settings.

The three shooting modes at the menu opening and the menu mode are displayed. The other three, except for the menu mode, can be assigned other shooting modes and this can be changed from the 'Shortcut' setting.

The AE Lock button allows you to lock the exposure by pressing the button once.
Both internal and external flash units can be used together or separately. Its flash also has three slow synchronizations and is designed for slow shutter speeds.
Motion JPEG format records videos in 320x240 size, with the Mov extension. (15 frames/sec.)

You can specify the AF target area by changing it from the menu. A total of nine AF areas can be selected.

In cases where AF is not possible due to the conditions, you can manually focus the lens. When you hold down the 'OK' button for a second, the focus selection adjustment bar will appear on the left side. After selecting the 'MF' at the bottom, you can set the distance with the up/down buttons.

The hand grip is quite comfortable.

Clean shots of the camera with accurate and pleasant colors.

On a gray and stormy day, the white balance gave quite the right result. The three photos above are from that day. In fact, the camera got quite wet under the drops and light rain brought by the strong wind blowing constantly by the sea. There is no waterproof feature, but the camera did not cause any problems.

In normal macro mode, the focus range is between 20 and 50 cm and you can zoom in. But still, this will not give you the feeling of shooting in macro mode and getting too close to the subject.  When you enter the menu and select Super Macro mode, you will see that this is the macro mode you need. This mode lets you shoot from as close as 4 cm/1.6" to your subject. The flash does not fire in the Super Macro mode. The position of the zoom is fixed and zoom cannot be used.

Super Macro shooting mode 1/30 sec, f/2.8, ISO 160.

Super Macro shooting mode 1/80 sec,f/2.8, ISO 50.

Unfortunately, there is no diopter correction setting on the viewfinder.

I believe that this compact camera, which has good and useful features compared to the year it was produced in 2003, has left a legacy of being used in the following years. The Olympus 5000Z is a camera with a stunning modern design that offers natural colors and sharp image performance, white balance, a firm and comfortable grip, button placement and comfortable control, including a one-touch image review button. If you can find it, try it without having big expectations, it will leave you with a feeling of pleasure.
